Senior PHP Developer
Edlight is looking for a Senior PHP Developer to join its team. Edlight is a business that builds AI products and expert services for students and professionals.
The role focuses on developing and maintaining new product functionality. It involves designing and implementing scalable, reliable, and maintainable technical solutions. Improving and refactoring existing codebases is also a key part of the role, ensuring system stability and minimising regressions.
Responsibilities include participating in code reviews and contributing to engineering best practices. Investigating and resolving production issues reported through Sentry is also expected. Collaboration with the team during planning sessions, technical discussions, and Scrum ceremonies is essential. Contributing to feature design and architectural decisions, and working closely with Product Managers, Designers, and Engineers to deliver high-quality user experiences are also key aspects.
Integrating third-party services and building resilient, fault-tolerant solutions, as well as driving technical excellence and continuously improving development processes, are also part of the role.

- Have 5+ years of commercial PHP development experience (required)
- Have strong knowledge of PHP 8+ (required)
- Possess deep hands-on experience with Symfony in production environments (required)
- Have a solid understanding of OOP principles and best practices, including SOLID, DRY, and KISS (required)
- Have strong SQL and MySQL knowledge, including query optimisation, indexing, and execution plan analysis (required)
- Have experience delivering features end-to-end, from requirements discussions to production release (required)
- Have worked with asynchronous processing and messaging systems such as Symfony Messenger and RabbitMQ (required)
- Understand idempotency, retry mechanisms, and error-handling strategies (required)
- Have experience integrating third-party APIs and building reliable services (required)
- Can confidently refactor legacy systems while minimising risks and regressions (required)
- Demonstrate strong architectural thinking and the ability to evaluate technical trade-offs (required)
- Actively use AI-powered development tools such as Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar solutions (required)
- Experience with GraphQL, particularly Overblog GraphQL Bundle (nice-to-have)
- Experience working with RabbitMQ and Symfony Messenger (nice-to-have)
- Knowledge of JavaScript and/or TypeScript (nice-to-have)
- Experience with AWS S3 (nice-to-have)
- Experience with Redis or Memcached (nice-to-have)
- Familiarity with WebSocket technologies, such as Centrifugo (nice-to-have)
- Experience with or interest in Python and FastAPI (nice-to-have)
