Staff Java Software Engineer

Description

The Sports Data & Odds Engineering organisation is responsible for developing, delivering, and operating a broad portfolio of products that power Sportradar's global sports data and betting ecosystem. This role is for a technical leader who wants to shape the direction of an engineering organisation, not just contribute to it. The individual will define architecture, drive strategy across multiple teams, and have the kind of influence that makes the whole platform better. At Sportradar, the problems are real, the scale is global, and the pace is fast. This is not a role for someone who wants to be told what to build.

Responsibilities
  • Define and drive technical architecture and engineering strategy across multiple teams and product areas.
  • Lead the design of scalable, high-performance distributed systems that process millions of real-time events daily.
  • Own complex cross-functional initiatives with significant business impact, from first principles through to production.
  • Set engineering standards, architecture principles, and the long-term technical roadmap for your area.
  • Mentor Senior Engineers and act as the technical anchor for teams working through ambiguous, high-stakes problems.
  • Influence engineering, product, and leadership stakeholders and translate technical strategy into business outcomes they care about.
  • Bring deep expertise in AWS, cloud-native platforms, Kubernetes, and event-driven architectures to decisions that matter at org level.
  • Lead platform modernization, technical transformation, and large-scale migration initiatives where needed.
Requirements
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience with extensive Java expertise and a strong track record in large-scale distributed systems (required).
  • Ability to lead architecture and technical strategy across multiple teams or products and drive initiatives with real business impact (required).
  • Deep expertise in AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and modern platform engineering (required).
  • Experience mentoring Senior Engineers and shaping engineering culture without needing direct management authority (required).
  • Ability to communicate with clarity at every level, from technical deep dives with engineers to strategic conversations with leadership (required).
  • Ability to define engineering standards and long-term roadmaps that teams actually use (required).
  • Experience in real-time, high-availability systems or mission-critical environments at global scale is a strong advantage (preferred).
  • Background in sports technology, betting, fintech, or other highly transactional environments is a plus (nice-to-have).
Benefits
  • Collaborative environment with colleagues from all over the world.
  • Ability to shape your own workday and career via a clearly defined professional and personal development plan.
  • Opportunity to work with senior leadership team and develop yourself within an inspiring and fast-growing company.
  • Vibrant and inclusive community, including Women in Tech and Pride groups which welcome all participants.
  • Flexible working hours.
