Engineering Director

Description

Our Product & Technology organization drives the development of Trustly’s products. The cross functional teams collectively work with innovative ideas, development of products and platform and set the vision and strategy for the problem spaces they own. The Product & Tech organisation consists of a bit more than 200 people spread across Stockholm, Lisbon, Paris, London and Izmir. All teams consist of a product manager, an engineering manager, a lead developer and engineers. Some teams also have designers and analytics competence in the team. They all work closely together to enable new products and features within existing products within Europe and to make sure the payment platform runs without interruptions and with high performance.

As Engineering Director for Acquiring, Settlement & Risk, you will lead one of Trustly’s most critical domains, spanning 5 to 7 teams and powering high-volume, high-availability systems that process live transactions at scale. At the core of our payment infrastructure, this domain owns acquiring flows, settlement pipelines, and real-time risk decisioning. As we continue to scale globally, we are evolving from a predominantly monolithic architecture toward a more modular, resilient setup - strengthening ownership, operational excellence, and scalability. Partnering closely with a Product Leader, you will jointly own the domain’s strategy, organization, and outcomes, playing a central role in completing this transformation. We’re looking for an engineering leader experienced in driving modernization at scale - combining technical depth, product instinct, and the ability to build high-performing teams.

Responsibilities
  • Co-own the domain’s mission, strategy, and roadmap with your Product counterpart, shaping both the “what” and the “how” as a leadership duo.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the business and customer needs , forming your own perspective and constructively challenging product direction.
  • Lead technical strategy and architectural transformation , including major initiatives (e.g., monolith to microservices), defining trade-offs, team boundaries, and ownership models with your domain architect.
  • Drive delivery and operational excellence , ensuring reliability, performance, scalability, and mature incident response practices.
  • Manage and develop a multi-team engineering organization , coaching Engineering Managers, building empowered teams, and shaping structure for high performance.
  • Champion engineering best practices , translating business problems into effective solutions and ensuring alignment with Trustly’s standards, processes, and ways of working.
  • As a member of Trustly's Senior Technology Leadership team, help drive improvements to Trustly’s engineering competence.
  • Play a key role in attracting, developing, and retaining top engineering talent for Trustly.
  • Shape Trustly’s engineering standards, processes, and ways of working.
  • Build a culture of empowerment and servant leadership.
Requirements
  • Proven manager of managers, leading multiple teams in high-transaction, high-availability environments.
  • Strong product instinct, experienced in product-led organizations and able to shape strategy, challenge roadmaps, and influence direction with business arguments.
  • Track record of setting technical strategy and driving architectural transformation across teams, including complex system migrations.
  • Experience building and operating mission-critical systems with a focus on reliability, scalability, and performance.
  • Built empowered product teams where engineers own problems and outcomes.
  • Clear, direct leader with strong coaching skills, balancing technical leadership, people management, and delivery.
