Engineering Manager, Platform Engineering - Infra

Description

As an Engineering Manager – Platform Engineering, the role involves leading engineering teams responsible for the platforms, tooling, and capabilities that enable application teams to build, deploy, observe, and operate their software reliably.

The successful candidate will lead approximately 10 to 12 engineers across Delivery and Observability. This involves working closely with Tech Leads, Architects, application engineering teams, and other Engineering Leaders to set direction, prioritise improvements, and ensure the platform delivers reliable and effective capabilities to its users.

This is a technically strong engineering leadership role. While day-to-day coding is not expected, the individual should be comfortable reviewing technical changes, challenging engineering decisions, understanding technical risks, and participating in production incidents. Accountability extends to the overall performance, stability, and operational health of the domain, ensuring platform services meet agreed SLAs/SLOs, reducing incidents, and continuously improving the experience for the engineering teams that depend on them.

Responsibilities
  • Own roadmap and delivery – Drive prioritisation, planning and execution across the domain, balancing platform improvements, operational commitments and organisational priorities.
  • Lead and develop high-performing teams – Build the right team structure, skills and culture while owning recruitment, performance, career development and succession planning.
  • Drive technical excellence – Partner with Tech Leads and Architects to challenge technical decisions, manage risks and ensure platform solutions are reliable, secure and maintainable.
  • Own platform performance and stability – Monitor SLAs/SLOs, service health and engineering metrics, driving continuous improvement, reducing incidents and improving reliability.
  • Lead operational excellence – Ensure operational readiness, observability, incident management and effective RCA, acting as an escalation point for major incidents and ensuring preventative actions are delivered.
  • Partner across the organisation – Work with application engineering teams, Architects and Engineering Leaders to understand needs, manage expectations, remove blockers and continuously improve platform capabilities and ways of working.

  • Strong understanding of observability, reliability and production operations (required)
  • Experience managing SLAs/SLOs, service performance and operational metrics, with a focus on improving stability and reducing incidents (required)
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management and problem-solving skills, with a pragmatic and outcome-focused approach (required)
  • Experience managing teams responsible for CI/CD, developer platforms, engineering tooling or software delivery platforms (nice-to-have)
  • Experience managing Observability, SRE or Platform Reliability teams (nice-to-have)
  • Experience with AWS or other major cloud platforms (nice-to-have)
  • Familiarity with technologies such as Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, Argo CD, Terraform, Ansible, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry or similar tooling (nice-to-have)
