South Africa allows online sports betting but not online casino games, and that split decides who hires here. Bookmakers are licensed by the nine provincial gambling boards under the National Gambling Act of 2004, and a provincial licence lets them take bets online as well as in shops. Online casinos have never been legal, and the National Gambling Board restated that in February 2026. A Remote Gambling Bill that would license them is before Parliament but has not passed, so for now no local company can hire to run one.

The Western Cape is the centre of the market. Its gambling board licenses many of the online bookmakers, and the province accounted for about 31% of the country's online gambling revenue in 2025, according to figures reported by AGB in April 2026. Cape Town is also where Super Group, the owner of Betway, runs much of its work through DigiOutsource, its in-house services company, and through Betway Africa. Their roles span software development, finance, risk and compliance, and data.
Not every job serves South African players. DigiOutsource supports Super Group brands in other countries too, and Games Global, the slot supplier that bought Microgaming's games business in 2022, has staff in South Africa working for operators abroad. Work on overseas casino products is a legitimate career here even though the games cannot be offered locally.
