Software Engineer III
Betway is looking for a Software Engineer III to join their team in Pretoria. This role involves taking ownership of complex technical projects from conception to production, requiring the ability to break down ambiguous problems and propose effective designs.
The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping technical features and services while driving engineering quality across the codebase. This position also involves mentoring junior engineers and acting as a reliable steward of production systems to ensure high performance and stability.
- Own complex pieces of work end to end
- Take ambiguous problems, break them down, propose a design and lead delivery through to production
- Make pragmatic trade-offs between speed, complexity, quality and cost, and clearly communicate them to the team
- Shape the technical design of features and services
- Lead design discussions, write design docs and represent your team in cross-team technical conversations
- Spot risks, dependencies and integration points early, and design solutions that hold up over time
- Drive engineering quality across the codebase
- Champion clean code, good test coverage, observability and security in everything we ship
- Lead refactors and modernisation work that pays down meaningful technical debt without grinding feature work to a halt
- Mentor and grow other engineers
- Actively coach Software Engineer I and II team members through pairing, code review and structured guidance
- Run internal sessions, write playbooks and share patterns that raise the bar across the team
- Be a reliable steward of production
- Lead complex incident investigations, drive root-cause analysis and turn learnings into lasting improvements
- Improve our monitoring, alerting and operational practices so we catch issues before our customers do
- Clear, confident communication (written and verbal), and the ability to breakdown complex ideas (required)
- A collaborative mindset, working smoothly with cross functional teams to hit shared goals (required)
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects without dropping the ball (required)

- 4+ years’ commercial software engineering experience, with a strong track record of delivering complex features end to end in production (required)
- Deep skills in C#/.NET, plus strong fundamentals in API design, databases, testing and Git-based workflows (required)
