Description

The Head of Technology will define and execute the end-to-end technology vision and roadmap, aligning with business and regulatory requirements. This role involves owning the full technical stack, including stablecoin issuance, custody and wallet infrastructure, on-chain settlement, and banking integrations.

The Head of Technology will lead the build and delivery of the Supercoin consumer wallet, ensuring a neobank-grade user experience and embedding agentic AI-driven features. They will also establish an integration-first platform model to deliver scalable, repeatable solutions.

Furthermore, the role encompasses embedding AI across the product and organisation to improve operational efficiency, customer support, and compliance workflows. The Head of Technology will own the security posture of the platform and lead incident response, monitoring, and resilience planning. They will also provide technical leadership for regulatory engagement, audits, and inspections.

This position requires building and scaling a high-performing engineering organisation, leading engineers, architects, and product teams through clear technical direction, coaching, mentorship, and performance development. The goal is to foster a high-performance, accountable, and innovative culture.

Responsibilities
  • Define and execute the end-to-end technology vision and roadmap, aligning with business and regulatory requirements.
  • Own the full technical stack, including stablecoin issuance (ZARsc), custody and wallet infrastructure, on-chain settlement and reconciliation, and banking, card, and partner integrations.
  • Lead the build and delivery of the Supercoin consumer wallet: Send, spend, receive, and top-up functionality, neobank-grade user experience, and agentic (AI-driven) features embedded in the product.
  • Oversee on-chain settlement and reconciliation across blockchain rails, banking systems, and card/payment networks.
  • Establish an integration-first platform model: Build reusable rails for on/off ramps, scan-to-pay, and enterprise flows, avoiding bespoke integrations by delivering scalable, repeatable solutions.
  • Embed AI across the product and organisation, including agentic capabilities within the wallet experience and internal tools to improve operational efficiency, reconciliation, customer support, case management, and AML and compliance workflows.
  • Own the security posture of the platform: Infrastructure security, key management security, and application-layer security.
  • Lead incident response, monitoring, and resilience planning.
  • Provide technical leadership for regulatory engagement, audits, and inspections.
  • Ensure alignment with financial regulatory requirements across South Africa and broader African markets.
  • Build and scale a high-performing engineering organisation. Lead engineers, architects, and product teams through clear technical direction, coaching and mentorship, and performance and capability development.
  • Foster a high-performance, accountable, and innovative culture.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, business administration, commerce or a related field (required)
  • 5+ years managing development team(s) or department(s) (required)
  • 10+ years of practical experience in the full software development life cycle as a software engineer, software developer, automation engineer, engineering lead or engineering manager (required)
  • 5+ years of practical experience in fintech or digital payments domain (required)
  • Web3 native: public chains, smart contracts, wallet architecture, custody models, on-chain monitoring, DeFi, stablecoins/tokenisation (required)
  • AI native: you build with AI - stand up agentic product features and internal tooling that removes real operational load (required)
  • Comfortable in a regulated environment; pragmatic about build vs integrate (required)
  • Expertise in managing multiple software development projects simultaneously, with a track record of delivering on time and within scope (required)
  • Ability to grasp complex strategy issues and turn this into a technology roadmap (required)
  • Strong understanding of software development, quality assurance, and data engineering principles (required)
  • Proven success in implementing Agile practices at scale (Scrum, SAFe, or similar frameworks) (required)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and effectively (required)
  • Exceptional attention to detail, ensuring high standards of quality in all outputs (required)
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing environments and priorities, maintaining effectiveness in dynamic situations (required)
  • Experience within fintech or digital payments space (nice-to-have)
  • Experience in software engineering of digital payment platforms (nice-to-have)
  • Knowledge in artificial intelligence, cloud computing and cybersecurity (nice-to-have)
  • Certified SAFe agile practitioner certification (nice-to-have)
