Payroll Governance and Transformation Specialist
Super Group is seeking a Payroll Governance and Transformation Specialist to assist the payroll function in moving beyond accurate processing towards a controlled, automated, and insight-driven operation. In this evolved role, the specialist will retain accountability for core payroll accounting while owning the payroll controls framework, driving automation under proper governance, and delivering analytics that give senior management and shareholders confidence in the numbers.
This position serves as a key line of defence in Super Group's SOX and internal control environment. The specialist will be a custodian of sensitive payroll data and a driver of business modernisation across all group payrolls. Their drive and ideas will help Super Group move faster, improve smarter, and stay ahead of the game.
- Manage and oversee the end-to-end payroll processing for employees, ensuring accurate calculations of salaries, bonuses, deductions, and other compensations using Payspace and Workday.
- Ensure compliance with payroll legislation, tax laws, and other statutory obligations.
- Review and submit the completion of the following reports for salary sign off: summary of payroll changes; variance reports; overtime payments; loan payments and balances; and bonus payments.
- Oversee salary journals from PaySpace into the ERP and monthly reconciliations (salary creditors to GL, salary control account, IRP5, employee loans to GL) and quarterly control account reconciliations in preparation for external audits.
- Ensure accurate tax filing and payment per the relevant country tax laws, and act as the escalation point for complex payroll queries from employees and management.
- Own, document, and maintain the end-to-end payroll controls framework across all entities, including control design, control ownership, testing evidence, and a RACI aligned to SOX requirements.
- Design and monitor controls independently of transaction input.
- Conduct annual payroll risk assessments across all in-scope entities and jurisdictions, maintaining a payroll risk register mapping key risks to mitigating controls.
- Coordinate SOX and internal control activity for payroll, ensuring control operation, evidence retention, and timely self-assessment.
- Act as the primary liaison for internal and external audit, and track control deficiencies and remediation actions to closure.
- Design and operate continuous automated controls monitoring to detect exceptions (duplicate payments, ghost employees, out-of-policy changes) before pay-run finalisation.
- Develop and deliver a payroll automation roadmap, identifying and prioritising opportunities to reduce manual effort across the payroll and journal-posting lifecycle.
- Ensure every automation, RPA bot, or scripted routine is built and maintained under formal change control – with documented requirements, testing/UAT sign-off, version control, and reviewer approval – so that automation does not introduce new, unmanaged control risk.
- Build and maintain automated reconciliations and exception reports that replace manual spreadsheet checks and surface anomalies for review.
- Design and maintain payroll dashboards and KPIs (cost, accuracy, timeliness, control health) in Power BI for Finance, HR, and EXCO decision-making.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives, standardising and re-engineering processes across systems (PaySpace, Workday, Business Central).
- Mentor and upskill the payroll team, and partner with HR and Finance on new hires, terminations, salary adjustments, benefits, and accurate cost allocation.
- Ensure payroll data is processed in line with POPIA, GDPR, and applicable local data-protection laws across all jurisdictions, and support any related data-subject requests or breach reporting.
- Own periodic user-access reviews for payroll systems (PaySpace, Workday), ensuring access is role-appropriate, least-privilege, and promptly revoked on role change or exit.
- Safeguard the confidentiality of sensitive remuneration data and apply the correct records-retention periods per local statutory requirements.
- Fully functional knowledge and experience of PaySpace (required)
- Working knowledge of Workday for HR and finance processes (required)
- Demonstrable experience designing and operating payroll or financial controls in a SOX or equivalent internal-control environment, including segregation-of-duties design (required)
- Working knowledge of data-protection requirements (POPIA and/or GDPR) and access-management or user-access review practices (required)
- Strong understanding of tax regulations, statutory requirements, and remuneration or salary-structuring practices across multiple jurisdictions (required)
- Advanced Microsoft Excel plus data-analytics capability (Power BI, Power Query or similar) to build dashboards and exception reporting (required)
- Familiarity with automation tooling (Power Automate / RPA) and an understanding of change-control and testing disciplines for automated routines (required)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability to identify, investigate, and resolve payroll discrepancies (required)
- Relevant payroll qualification or Bachelor’s degree and/or SAPA membership (required)
- Minimum 5 years’ hands-on payroll experience with at least 2 years in a senior or supervisory role (required)
- Strong written and verbal communication, able to convey complex control and data findings clearly to varied audiences (required)
- Exceptional attention to detail, deadline management, and the ability to adapt in a dynamic, multi-entity environment (required)
- Experience in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and awareness of interface controls or ITGCs between PaySpace, Workday, and BC (nice-to-have)
- Experience processing payroll in foreign currencies and across multiple jurisdictions (UK, Guernsey, US, Israel, Africa entities) (nice-to-have)
- Exposure to IFRS/GAAP payroll accounting and total-cost-of-employment reporting (nice-to-have)
- Data or audit-analytics certification (e.g. Power BI, ACL/Alteryx) (nice-to-have)
- Experience training or coaching junior payroll team members (nice-to-have)
- Supergrowth learning and development programmes
- Performance tool for feedback and development support
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Group Life Cover
- Funeral Fund Benefit
- Income Continuation Benefit
- Medical Aid Subsidy
