Infrastructure Engineering Director
FanDuel is seeking an Infrastructure Engineering Director to own the company's foundational cloud and outpost-based infrastructure layer. This role involves establishing operational excellence, standardisation, and reliability across compute, networking, Kubernetes, and cloud provisioning systems. It is a hands-on technical leadership position focused on ensuring systems run predictably through clear processes, documented procedures, and a culture of rigour.
As FanDuel scales across new markets and cloud footprints, the Infrastructure Engineering Director must ensure the infrastructure foundation supports this growth without creating operational chaos or cost surprises. The role requires driving standardisation in areas such as provisioning, observability, disaster recovery, and cost attribution, while building a team that operates with purpose and discipline. The director will manage vendor relationships, oversee cloud spend, and balance cost optimisation with system resilience.
- Establishing infrastructure strategy and standards across cloud provisioning, observability, disaster recovery, and cost governance.
- Building and scaling the infrastructure engineering team with operational rigor and discipline.
- Creating career paths and developing infrastructure engineers into senior and leadership roles.
- Owning disaster recovery strategy, RTO/RPO definitions, testing, and organizational readiness.
- Establishing SLOs/SLIs for foundational infrastructure services.
- Designing and evolving cloud infrastructure for resilience, cost, and operational clarity.
- Managing AWS, outposts, Kubernetes orchestration, networking, mesh, and compute provisioning.
- Setting standards for operational discipline including change management, incident response, post-mortems, and continuous improvement.
- Managing vendor relationships, cloud costs, and capacity planning.
- Owning the business relationship with infrastructure, including negotiating contracts, optimising spend, and planning the cloud adoption roadmap.
- Leading complex production incident response across infrastructure domains such as Kubernetes, networking, DNS, load balancing, service mesh, and cloud services.
- Stewarding infrastructure platforms operating under strict regulatory and compliance requirements.
- Partnering with engineering and product leadership to influence platform direction, roadmap priorities, and long-term infrastructure strategy.
- Evaluating build-versus-buy decisions and vendor capabilities against infrastructure requirements and operational sustainability goals.
- Mentoring engineers and raising infrastructure, platform networking, and operational maturity across the organisation.
- Significant experience leading platform engineering, SRE, or infrastructure organisations (required).
- Deep expertise in Kubernetes architecture, operations, and scaling (required).
- Working knowledge of container orchestration, cluster design, workload isolation, and multi-cluster management (required).
- Strong hands-on understanding of AWS cloud infrastructure including VPCs, networking, IAM, EC2, EKS, cost management, and operating hybrid AWS environments including Outposts (required).
- Experience defining and driving platform, reliability, or infrastructure strategy across teams (required).
- Proven ability to establish operational discipline such as documented runbooks, change management processes, incident response frameworks, and blameless post-mortem culture (required).
- Experience designing and implementing disaster recovery, RTO/RPO definitions, failover testing, and resilience improvements across production systems (required).
- Experience defining and implementing SLOs, SLIs, and alerting strategies for infrastructure services using user-centric and business-aligned metrics (required).
- Strong software engineering fundamentals with proficiency in at least one modern programming language (required).
- Ability to build scalable tooling and automation (required).
- Track record of driving large-scale operational improvements through automation (required).
- Understanding of cloud cost drivers and the ability to optimise spend without sacrificing reliability, resilience, or team velocity (required).
- Strong analytical and communication skills with the ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders (required).
- Experience with service mesh platforms such as Kong Mesh, Istio, Linkerd, or Envoy-based systems (nice-to-have).
- Hands-on experience managing AWS Outposts or hybrid cloud infrastructure (nice-to-have).
- Experience operating infrastructure in regulated industries where network segmentation, auditability, security controls, and uptime are critical (nice-to-have).
- CNCF Kubernetes certifications such as CKA, CKS, or CKAD (nice-to-have).
- Familiarity with observability platforms like Datadog, Prometheus, and tracing systems (nice-to-have).
