Software Engineering Director
FanDuel is looking for a Software Engineering Director to lead the teams within the Customer Product Engineering (CPE) domain. This domain is responsible for the systems that fans interact with first, including payments, account onboarding, geolocation, responsible gaming, and player integrity. The role also covers the marketing and personalisation tools that shape the daily fan experience.
The Software Engineering Director will lead managers and senior engineers across multiple teams, setting technical direction and ensuring the reliability of systems that must handle extreme, event-driven peak loads. The role requires a leader who can balance technical trade-offs, navigate a heavily regulated environment, and maintain high standards for auditability and evidence. This is a hands-on leadership position that involves close collaboration with Product, Compliance, Risk, Finance, and Customer Operations teams.
- Lead multiple engineering teams within CPE, setting a clear technical vision for each area and holding delivery to it.
- Own customer outcomes such as registration completion, time to first bet, deposit and withdrawal success rates, and payout speed.
- Set the standard for availability and operational excellence, including KPIs and instrumentation.
- Prepare for event-driven peak loads by ensuring capacity, failover, and degradation behaviour are proven in advance.
- Reduce the blast radius of third-party failures using redundancy and clear fallbacks.
- Treat regulation as an engineering requirement by designing for auditability, data boundaries, and jurisdictional variation.
- Hold responsible gaming and player integrity to high product standards.
- Simplify the technical estate by retiring duplicated capability and reducing coupling between teams.
- Set the standard for AI usage across the software lifecycle within the teams.
- Partner with Product, Compliance, Risk, Finance, and Customer Operations to shape the roadmap.
- Manage hiring, development, and performance management while leading with empathy.
- Grow managers and senior engineers by providing context and scope for decision-making.
- Ensure the domain is supported in production, including on-call and incident response.
- Deliver architecturally sound solutions and make build-versus-buy decisions.
- Communicate and progress strategic initiatives on a three to five-year horizon.
- Manage the budget and recognise waste in tooling, infrastructure, and vendor services.
- Exemplify company principles and support a culture of quality, candour, and collaboration.
- 10+ years in a software role, with 5+ years leading engineering teams (required)
- Experience leading other managers (required)
- Track record of delivering and running high-volume transactional systems in payments, financial services, identity, or regulated domains (required)
- Experience with highly available, fault-tolerant systems under extreme, event-driven peak load (required)
- Experience building on third parties at scale, such as payment providers, KYC vendors, or geolocation suppliers (required)
- Comfortable working in a regulated environment with auditability and data boundary requirements (required)
- Experience with observability and using data and KPIs to make engineering decisions (required)
- Deep experience in modern back-end languages, functional and object-oriented, including Java (required)
- Experience with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS, containers, and orchestration (required)
- Hands-on understanding of AI-assisted software development (required)
- Experience defining and implementing software delivery practices and agile methods (required)
- Experience supporting software systems in production, including on-call (required)
- Experience delivering technology solutions with partner development teams through near-shore, off-shore, or third-party arrangements (required)
- Experience designing and delivering technology for consumer-facing products in a fast-moving environment (required)
- Experience defining and executing a strategic technical vision with strong communication skills (required)
- Degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience (required)
- Competitive compensation
- Exciting and fun environment committed to driving real growth
- Opportunities to build products that fans love
- Mentorship and professional development resources
- Flexible vacation allowance
- Hall of Fame benefit programs and platforms
