Staff Analytics Engineer

Description

FanDuel is seeking a Staff Analytics Engineer to join its Sports Modeling & Innovation team. This role is a senior technical leadership position within a global data initiative aimed at expanding and enhancing the auxiliary data that can be joined to customer bet data. The engineer will define the technical direction for sourcing, ingesting, modelling, and serving new data assets. They will be responsible for designing, building, and scaling the data models, pipelines, and architecture that support business performance impacting decisions for data scientists, analysts, and traders.

The first year of this work will be hands-on, encompassing real-time data ingestion, building scrapers, and establishing a medallion architecture from the ground up. The initial focus will be on NBA and NFL data, followed by a pivot to an international soccer model. Beyond technical execution, the role involves mentoring other analytics engineers and driving improvements to engineering best practices, standards, and ways of working. This is an opportunity for a seasoned engineer who thrives in an environment that rewards curiosity and empowers decision-making.

Responsibilities
  • Architecting and building pipelines for fast (often real-time) ingestion of auxiliary data into well-designed data stores (SQL, Delta Lake, medallion architecture), including standing up new sources from scratch.
  • Building and maintaining scrapers and validation pipelines that source new external data, flag bad or missing data, and evolve as new datasets and sports come online.
  • Owning the design and delivery of the medallion architecture and data transformation jobs for the global data project, setting standards for the codebase and troubleshooting complex issues across the stack.
  • Establishing scalable approaches to database management and automated data cleaning across large, messy, and heterogeneous datasets.
  • Making decisions between memory and speed trade-offs to best optimise team’s project needs - helping reduce query execution times where possible and remove unnecessary/unused metrics.
  • Partnering with stakeholders to prioritise and deliver the data products (curated datasets, Tableau dashboards, R Shiny apps) built on top of the new auxiliary data.
  • Mentoring other analytics engineers, leading by example, and driving adoption of best practices, coding standards, and design patterns across the team.
  • Influencing technical strategy and roadmap for the global data project, making pragmatic build-vs-buy and architecture decisions in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
Requirements
  • 7+ years of experience working in an analytics/data engineering role, including senior or lead-level responsibilities (required)
  • 4+ years designing and maintaining databases and data ingestion pipelines, ideally including real-time ingestion and web scraping (required)
  • Deep understanding of relational databases (required)
  • Proficient in SQL, Databricks, R/Python, Tableau, AWS s3 buckets, command line (required)
  • Proven experience building production data pipelines with Python/R and Databricks (required)
  • Hands-on experience designing medallion (bronze/silver/gold) or comparable layered architectures (required)
  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in a highly numerate major (Math, Stats, Econ, etc.) or relevant experience in data analysis role (required)
  • Strong personal organisational and time management skills (required)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment (required)
  • Strong problem-solving skills (required)
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and elevating a team's technical best practices, standards, and ways of working (required)
  • Comfort operating with ambiguity in a scrappy, early-stage build, making sound architecture and prioritisation decisions with incomplete information (required)
  • Exposure to sports data (NBA/NFL, and especially international soccer) is a strong plus (nice-to-have)
  • Curiosity about AI and emerging technologies is a plus (nice-to-have)
Benefits
  • Choice of health plans, some as low as $0 per paycheck, including programs for fertility and family planning, mental health support, and fitness benefits.
  • Generous paid time off (PTO & sick leave).
  • Annual bonus and long-term incentive opportunities (based on performance).
  • 401k with up to a 5% match.
  • Commuter benefits.
  • Pet insurance.
  • 14 paid company holidays.
