Lead Data Engineer
Better Collective is seeking a Lead Data Engineer to own the data landscape within its Paid Media domain. This role involves managing the end-to-end data lifecycle, ensuring the reliability, freshness, and accuracy of data models that inform critical business decisions regarding advertising spend and campaign performance.
The Lead Data Engineer will operate within a hub and spoke organisational structure, acting as a demanding customer to the central platform team while maintaining full accountability for the Paid Media domain's data products. This is a hands-on technical leadership position that requires deep involvement in coding, system architecture, and the mentorship of a group of data engineers.
- Own the end-to-end user-level model, integrating ad platform spend and delivery, affiliate and operator revenue, and CRM data into one view.
- Manage the ingestion of paid media sources, built on the platform's framework, and maintain the domain's models from staging through to the marts analysts and business teams query.
- Define the semantic meaning for data metrics within the paid media context, such as what constitutes a qualified signup.
- Implement reverse ETL processes to feed online and offline conversion data back into ad platforms to influence bidding.
- Take over the paid media jobs currently run by the central team, moving ownership to where the context actually lives.
- Guide and mentor a group of data engineers in Paid Media Insights, setting the standard for how this domain builds, reviewing their work, and unblocking them.
- Shape the domain's roadmap together with the Senior Head of Paid Media Insights, analysts, and business teams.
- Represent paid media in platform conversations, including how to support machine learning and data science on top of this data.
- Take ownership and be willing to be on-call for production issues.
- Ability to break complex systems into simple parts and reason about complex data, including attribution windows, late conversions, identity across platforms, and differing source APIs.
- Ability to raise the people around you by providing technical advice, giving feedback, and reviewing generously.
- Ability to work well with a platform team, understanding the difference between a constraint worth fighting and a preference worth dropping.
- Experience with AI as part of engineering, including experimenting with agents, tooling, or AI-enabled workflows.
- Proximity to the business, with the ability to talk about data with non-technical stakeholders.
- Technical depth in production pipelines in SQL and Python, modelling and orchestration tooling such as dbt and Dagster, cloud data warehousing, and performance, cost, and reliability at scale (required).
- Experience with paid media or attribution data (nice-to-have).
- Experience with machine learning pipelines (nice-to-have).
- Flexible working hours supporting a healthy work-life balance.
- Private health insurance.
- Office perks including lunch, snacks, and gym access.
- Participation in social events.
- Opportunity to work in a dynamic, international environment with a flat organisational structure.
