Backend Developer

Description

Join the Blue Team, a backend engineering team building one of Sportradar's core betting platforms. Using Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and event-driven architecture, the team develops high-performance, scalable systems that process millions of transactions and power betting experiences for clients worldwide. The role involves working on complex technical challenges alongside experienced engineers in a fast-paced, product-driven environment.

The developer will implement domain logic and definitions within the system, and collaborate on product requirements by providing feedback and asking the right questions. They will build reliable and scalable solutions, aiming for clean implementations that minimise bugs and reduce the need for support or rework. Continuous learning is encouraged, whether it's the business domain, current technologies, or new tools and approaches to explore. The role also involves actively suggesting improvements to technical solutions or domain implementation at any time, especially during team planning sessions and retrospectives.

Responsibilities
  • Implement domain logic and definitions within the system.
  • Collaborate on product requirements by providing feedback and asking the right questions.
  • Build reliable and scalable solutions, aiming for clean implementations that minimize bugs and reduce the need for support or rework.
  • Continuously learn the business domain, current technologies, and new tools and approaches.
  • Actively suggest improvements to technical solutions or domain implementation during team planning sessions and retrospectives.
Requirements
  • Strong experience with Java (required).
  • Solid hands-on experience with Spring Boot (REST APIs, configuration, security basics) (required).
  • Good understanding of object-oriented design, clean code, and design principles (SOLID) (required).
  • Experience building and maintaining backend services in production environments (required).
  • Proficiency working with SQL databases and NoSQL databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB) - Designing schemas, writing efficient queries, indexing (required).
  • Familiarity with Git and modern development workflows (code reviews, pull requests) (required).
  • Knowledge of messaging and event-driven systems: Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar (required).
  • Practical experience using Docker - Building images, local development, containerized services (required).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices (required).
  • Experience writing unit and integration tests (required).
  • Able to work independently and take ownership of features from design to production (required).
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and attention to detail (required).
  • Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders (required).
  • Willingness to mentor less experienced engineers (especially for Senior role) (required).
  • Comfortable working in an Agile/Scrum environment (required).
  • Proactive attitude and continuous learning mindset (required).
  • Exposure to Kubernetes (deployment concepts, Helm, scaling, troubleshooting) (nice-to-have).
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) (nice-to-have).
  • Experience making architectural and technical decisions (nice-to-have).
  • Ability to design scalable and maintainable systems (nice-to-have).
  • Leading by example in code quality, reviews, and best practice (nice-to-have).
  • Supporting the team with technical guidance and mentorship (nice-to-have).
  • Practical experience using AI tools to support software development (nice-to-have).
  • Ability to critically evaluate AI-generated code and ensure correctness, security, and maintainability (nice-to-have).
  • Understanding of best practices and limitations of AI-assisted development (nice-to-have).
  • Comfortable integrating AI tools into day-to-day engineering workflows to improve productivity and quality (nice-to-have).
